    About CaricomLaw

Welcome to CARICOMLaw, the website of the CARICOM Secretariat dedicated to presentation and discussion of Caribbean legal materials.

The idea of a secure website for CARICOM Law emerged from the Sixth Meeting of the Sub-Committee of the Legal Affairs Committee on Harmonisation of Laws, held on 22 March 2005 at the Breezes Resort and Golf Club, Runaway Bay, St. Ann, Jamaica. The Meeting mandated the utilization of electronic communication in order to enable Attorneys General, Chief Parliamentary Counsel, the Legal Division of the Secretariat and the CARICOM Legislative Drafting Facility to share information and ideas on the drafting and the development of Caribbean law.

CARICOMLaw.org became effective on 24 August 2005 with a clear directive to provide support to Member States in the discharge of their Treaty obligations relative to legislative support for the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). Access to ongoing legislative work in other Member States and in the CARICOM Secretariat should reduce duplication and should make for more efficient use of the region's human resources in legal drafting. An inventory of draft legislation and regulations will also provide a constant reminder and stimulus for required action for Member States.

The website will also provide the text of CARICOM legal documents and related information including dates of signature, ratification and accession and implementation by domestic legislation as well as links to related sites throughout the Community. In time we hope to provide for forum for discussing ideas and concepts related to Caribbean jurisprudence and the rule of law, thus making this forum the premier website for law in the region.

Again, welcome, and best wishes for rewarding surfing!
